Ever fancied making your own handmade wedding invitations but not sure where to start? Then read on as I show you how to make a simple yet elegance wedding invite. The design pictured can easily be amended to suit your wedding theme.

To make this card you will need

  • Card Stock or Card Blanks
  • 23mm or 25mm Wide Ribbon (Approximately 42 cm per card)
  • Foam Pads and Double Sided Tape/Tape Pen
  • Paper for the Insert
  • Patterned and Plain Card for the Panel
  • Envelopes
  • Creaser (this creates a neat crease in the card)
  • Ruler
  • A Laser or Inkjet Printer
  • Scissors, Scalpel or Guillotine to cut the card

Quantities will vary depending how many cards you need to make.

How to Make

Step 1. The first thing you will need to do is cut your card to size. The card I created is 14 cm by 14cm folded. Unfolded 14cm by 28cm.

Score and crease the card. Using a creaser will create a neater finish than folding the card by hand alone. The creaser should be run down the fold of the card. If you are using card blanks they should be pre-scored ready for you to fold. Once folded you are ready for the next step.

Step 2. Assemble the panel. The panel is two squares of card layered on top of each other. The bottom layer is 6 cm by 6 cm the top is 5cm by 5cm. You can choose any patterned card that you like. I have printed the initials of the Bride and Groom on the top layer. You could use stamps to create the same effect. The top panel is stuck to the bottom panel with double sided tape.

Step 3. Attach the panel to the card. The panel is attached to the card with foam pads. Or if you prefer you can stick the panel to the card with double sided tape if you do not want a raised panel.

Step 4. Cut a strip of ribbon to size. Then place the ribbon inside the card. Leave equal amounts of ribbon at either side. Then tie a knot on the front of the card. If you would like you could tie a bow. Once the knot or bow is tied cut the ribbon ends off at an angle. The outer of the card is now finished.

Step 5. Print and attach an insert with your chosen wording. The insert should be smaller than the outer card. I recommend an insert of 13cm by 26cm. The insert only needs to be glued on one side. Use double sided tape for this or a tape pen.

You should repeat the step until you have the quantity your require. You can also make matching stationery in the same style. You now have your own handmade wedding invitations ready to send to your guests.

Need Ideas to Make this Card fit Your Wedding Theme?

Below I have listed some possible changes you could make to create a design which suits your wedding theme perfectly.

  • Change the paper/card colour, or change the texture – linen, hammered, embossed, etc.
  • Choose a different coloured ribbon or ribbon type. You could use a small width or larger width ribbon, maybe organza ribbon or a patterned ribbon.
  • Use a image in the centre panel instead of the Bride and Groom's initials.
  • Change the size and proportions of the card. You could create a tall, DL sized card or an A5 card.
  • You could add crystal embellishments for an element of sparkle.
